The Jerusalem Hug promotes peace, freedom and joy to all people in Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Hug focuses on love, respect and unity between all people. At the annual Hug, participants surround the walls of the Old City holding hands, singing and praying for peace and respect for all humankind.
The Jerusalem Hug is held on the day of the summer solstice, when the axial tilt of the planet’s semi-axis is most inclined towards the sun. The day on which the summer solstice and the hug occur is the day of the year with the longest period of daylight. On that day, people from the various faith communities of Jerusalem, are joined by people committed to peace from all over the world.
The Jerusalem Hug is a symbol of a way to achieve peace, the way of the heart. The Jerusalem Hug is based on the belief that when we find peace in ourselves and when we are able to forgive, world peace will come closer. Change begins at the basis.
The Jerusalem Hug begins with the Planetary Dance, a ritual of healing and community renewal. The dance is an invitation to people all over the world to join in a dance for peace in Jerusalem. The dance brings people of all ages and abilities together next to the walls of Jerusalem to “dance for a purpose”. Each person stands, as he/she feels moved to do so and calls out a dedication for a person/cause/situation that needs healing. This personal dedication is a powerful experience. Participants are invited to run, walk, or simply stand in a series of concentric circles, creating a moving mandala. As the participants move to the steady heartbeat of the drums, they become one collective body. As the sun begins to set, something exceptional occurs. The “collective body” approaches the old city, embracing the walls of Jerusalem. Each step, each hug, becomes a prayer for healing and peace.
Jerusalem stands as a symbol for peace and forgiveness in the world. When enough people move together with a common pulse and a common purpose, a profound force can take over. People stop moving as individuals and begin to move as if they were parts of a larger body, a group spirit.
The Jerusalem Hug is a power that can renew, inspire, teach, and heal. Let Jerusalem be a city of connection, the heart of the world where unity and peace will be a fact.
